Downtown Portland's thriving city center features a number of local and historical landmarks including City Hall and Pioneer Courthouse Square, which is a popular gathering place in our city’s center. The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall was built in 1928 and offers a first-class venue for visiting performers when not being used by the Oregon Symphony.
Shopping and Dining
Southwest Portland offers a variety of shopping experiences for every preference and whim. Pioneer Place offers a four-story shopping experience witha unique selectionstores,eateries and a top-floor movie theater. Looking for something more home-grown? Be sure to check out the Portland Saturday Market in Portland’s historic Old Town, where local artists present handcrafted art and useable products with a unique Northwest flair. Dining opportunities abound in Southwest Portland offering everything from ethnic cuisine, to fast-stop delis to gourmet pizza. While downtown be sure to visit Jake’s Famous Crawfish on SW 12th Avenue, considered one of the country’s top seafood restaurants -- and a Portland favorite for over 100 years!
Parks and Recreation
Three beautiful parks further distinguish Southwest Portland. Tom McCall Waterfront Park on the Willamette River offers over 35 acres of peaceful recreation, including walking paths and the Salmon Street Springs play fountain for cooling off on those warm summer days. For a shaded escape, the South Park Blocks provide Portland residents with beautiful recreation area in the heart of the city, offering pedestrians a scenic path under a canopy of trees spanning 12 city blocks. Perhaps the most popular park, however, is found in the southwest hills. Washington Park features the deepest underground rail station in the United States, at 260 feet below ground, and serves as an epicenter for visitors of several parks including the Portland Japanese Garden, The International Rose Test Garden, Hoyt Arboretum, the Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Oregon Zoo.
The Portland Timbers also make southwest Portland home. The Timbers have called Portland home since 2001 and 2011 marks their inaugural season in Major League Soccer.
Living
Southwest Portland Oregon provides a variety of exciting living environments, from the "Big City" urban experiences found downtown, to the established communities and close-knit neighborhoods that span the area. Urban living opportunities are found throughout the greater downtown area, and in the new North Macadam Urban Renewal Area located in the South Waterfront. Highrise units offer commanding views of the Willamette River, Mount Hood, and the Portland skyline.
The charm of northwest living can also be found in our local neighborhoods, each an easy commute to the downtown area. Mutlnomah Village is located in the heart of the Multnomah neighborhood and offers antique shops, restaurants, and galleries. Hillsdale is another popular Southwest Portland neighborhood, offering small-town suburban living. Here you can find a great mix of homes ranging from the modest bungalow to the larger hillside homes and estates with commanding river, mountain, and city views.
Schools, Health, Transportation
Southwest Portland has a wealth of community resources at its fingertips and is home to both Lewis and Clark College and Portland State University. Several hospitals are located here as well including Doernbecher Children's Hospital, the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and the Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU), which is Oregon's only health and research university. Portland's public transportation network offers residents excellent access to public transportation, including TriMet, Portland Streetcar, MAX Light Rail, and the new Portland Aerial Tram.
